In the hype leading up to the releases of Playstation Move and Microsoft’s Kinect, Sony have released a bunch of advertisements that have taken cracks at X-box’s new motion control device. More than anything, Sony keep emphasising the importance of having a genuine controller device in your hand, and the importance that has on the ability to play more hardcore games.
Now they’ve gone and launched a website dedicated to bashing Kinect’s lack of buttons called yaybuttons.com. The site definitely has a Kevin Butler charm to it in promoting the importance of buttons. “Not like ‘save the whales’ important. More like ‘not play games that suck’ important.”
Sony definitely have some ballsy advertising, and I’m sure its going to please as many Sony fans as it’s going to infuriate Microsoft ones.
Is this awesome advertising or just classless? Even if it’s classless, I still can’t find any sympathy for Microsoft. After their horrid celebration of the Windows Phone reaching RTM status with a funeral procession for the iPhone recently, I can only say they’re getting a taste of their own medicine.
Comparing both, I’m tempted to side with Sony. While both are arrogant, Sony’s advertising at least has a Kevin Butler spice of humour to it. Microsoft’s just strikes me as a bit of an inferiority complex gone too far, Steve Ballmer style. Not that Steve Ballmer is known for going over the top or anything. But light hearted competitiveness beats bitter lash-backs, always. [Via Kotaku]

I kinda don’t like all the bashing and there seems to be tons of it. I do admit that some of this “no buttons” bashing is pretty funny though. Kinda like when you see a kid wipe out on his skateboard sort of funny. It’s not funny… but it is.
Kinect will be awesome
