Team Ico comes to Playstation 3

If you’ve never heard of Team Ico, it’s definitely time to start.

Creators of two of the most stunning and somewhat haunting games to hit Playstation 2, Team Ico are now returning with their newest instalment for the Playstation 3. The Last Guardian debuted at E3 this year and a new trailer premiered at the recent Tokyo Game Show. Now I’m planning to hibernate until it’s release in winter 2011.

The first thing I took away from this trailer is just how incredible it looks. Team Ico have used this style for all of their games and this is certainly no bad thing. Their use of cel shaded graphics steps away from the comic or ‘child-like’ feel that many other games have, and instead brings in a sense of realism mixed with art. The griffin type creature (or as many said after watching E3, Falcor!) looks and moves with incredible realism and all the added wind effects in the trailer just goes to show off how much effort has gone into animating each and every feather on its body. The scenery is also typical Team Ico, taking you to desolate lands and crumbling ruins. I’m hoping that like its predecessors, The Last Guardian will be devoid of any intrusive background music. The silence mixed with isolation is what made these games so haunting. This of course made you thankful for the company of Yorda (Ico) and Agro (Shadows of the Colossus). It looks like the creature Trico will be your company in this game.

Little else is known about the storyline of this game or the relationship between the boy and Trico, but I’m sure more information will be released as the long wait until ‘holiday 2011′ comes along.

The second piece of good news to appear with this release is that they are also bringing out a ‘remastered in HD’ edition of Ico and Shadows of the Colossus, just like they did with the God of War collectors edition. This allows those who are new to the franchise or those who just enjoy a bit of trophy collecting a chance to play through two classics on their Playstation 3.

I’ll without a doubt be getting my hands on this. Why own a good game once when you can own it twice? Or maybe that’s just insanity talking. But nonetheless these are two games worth playing. After all, there really are no words that can fully describe how it feels to come across your first Colossi.

No news on any release dates as of yet for this collection but I hope the wait won’t be as long as The Last Guardian, and it would be great to see more of these remastered editions hitting the Playstation 3 in the future.

It’s perfect way us nostalgic gamers to show the younger players just how much better games were ‘back in my day’ while they ‘pwn n00bs’ on Modern Warfare 2.
